"There is something about a candle that makes it more spiritual than physical. A physical substance, when spread, becomes thin. Spirituality, when spread, expands and grows.

When you use something physical, it is diminished. The more money you spend, the less you have; the more gasoline you use, the more empty your tank becomes; the more food you eat, the more you need to restock your pantry. But spiritual things increase with use. If I use my wisdom to teach, the student learns, and I come out wiser for it; if I share my love with another, I become more loving, not less. When you give a spiritual gift, the recipient gains, and you lose nothing.

This is the spiritual property that candles share. When you use one candle to light another, the original candle remains bright. Its light is not diminished by being shared; on the contrary, the two candles together enhance each others' brightness and increase light.

We sometimes worry that we may stretch ourselves too thin. In matters of sprit, this is never the case. The more goodness we spread the more goodness we have. By making a new friend you become a better friend to your old friends. By having another child you open a new corridor of love in your heart that your other children benefit from, too. By teaching more students, you become wiser.

Keep lighting your candles. There is an endless supply of light in your soul. You will never run out of goodness."

As I have sat, relatively immobile for the past six weeks,  I have had the precious opportunity  to go inward for a sustained period of time. My "accident" provided me with the chance to be still. Really still.   Sometimes painfully still.   Gulp!  

In this stillness, I have been struck by a recurrent message. Strangely (or not) the message has been about the illusion of duality ~ specifically about the apparent separation of light and dark....Hmmmm.....   

Over and over, I have been overwhelmed by this feeling that there isn't a choice between the forces of dark and light (this feeling has been reinforced by the fact that my boys have recently "discovered" Star Wars..LOL:)); rather, dark and light simply "are" one and the same. And, along this vein, we don't have to choose to go towards the light (or dark); rather we can simply "be" light.  

Now, I know this isn't a "new" realization; on an intellectual level I have "known" this for years. However, over the past several weeks something has just clunked into place. It's as if this sense of knowing has settled into my knitting bones. Wild.    

So, where am I going with this? Well, these are undeniably "dark" times we're living in and it is easy to feel helpless, small and angry at the dark forces "out there".  It is easy to  wallow in despair or, on the flip side, slip into denial about the existence of darkness. It takes courage to walk forward into the "dark" and explore that which is unknown about ourselves and the universe.  

Interestingly, I have witnessed many coaching clients, friends and acquaintances  stepping or  leaping into the unknown as of late. And, almost universally, they are discovering that the darkness simply "is" and -yeah!- there is a way  through it. Hmmm....    

As we approach the darkest day of the year, it seems fitting to delve deep into the darkness and see what comes up....  

I have a hunch we will find that we are lighter than we ever imagined!

Have you ever wondered about cap and trade as a real solution to climate change?

I sure have. To me, it just seems that the whole situation calls for an entirely new approach. Approaching it with the "same old, same old" thinking is surely bound to get us the same results we've seen in the past. And we all know that this thinking has contributed to the situation we find ourselves in today...GULP!

Sooo, let's get creative folks and throw away the box when it comes to considering how to best create solutions to climate change. Hmmmm....

Annie  leonard does a great job of calling for innovation. Take a moment to watch her film. Listen with your heart. Use your imagination.

Remember, it isn't up to corporations or government to rescue us....."We are the ones we've been waiting for".
