Your Fear vs. Intuitive Caution

December 9th, 2011

Your intuition has an internal alarm system that sends off warning signals to keep you safe and on the right path. Sometimes you may ignore them. Simple reasons could be you’re feeling very stressed or fear has sent your inner signals haywire, clouding your perception of things. An intuitive alarm can sound off in several ways such as feeling a rush of energy in your gut, heaviness in your chest, physical fatigue, mental fogginess, emotional unease or a clear cognizance – you just know something isn’t right for you but you may not be able to share why at the time.

You’ve heard the saying, “Trust your gut.” How do you know if your gut is wired with Divine guidance or your own ego’s fears holding you back?

A friend recently shared that she had discovered the difference.

She wanted this glam job desperately. It paid well, offered amazing benefits and would place her in a fun environment working with girlie girls in the world of beauty. Suspense was building as it came down to two applicants for the job: her and another girl. She was euphoric when she got the call that she had been chosen!

During her first week on the new job she quickly learned why the pay was so lush: it was a lot of work. She was responsible for a whopping 80+ accounts and hitting sales targets every month. She spent all day arranging schedules and driving from one town to the next. By the end of the day, she was exhausted and she began to have panic attacks.

At first, she questioned whether the job was right for her since she knew her intuition would often send high alert signals out via panic attacks. She began having panic attacks when she was with her ex-boyfriend. The panic attacks guided her to an awakening that the relationship wasn’t right for her. She had no regrets quitting the relationship. And the panic attacks stopped.

But this time, she didn’t feel the panic attacks were encouraging her to quit this new job. When she explored her soul deeper, she realized that her greatest fear about the job was that she wasn’t good enough to hack it. She dreaded the thought of disappointing her driven boss who believed in her, and feared that her dyslexia would somehow botch her efforts.

Aside from these underlying fears, she felt the job itself was lovely. She was discovering new views of the country on her drives, she loved the product she was selling and the girlie environment she worked in was fun.

Once she recognized that her intuition wasn’t cautioning her spirit to leave the job, and that it was only her mind’s insecurities that were filling her with dread, she was able to move forward fearlessly in her new position.

How often do you stop and ask yourself where a fear or insecurity is coming from? Sometimes you’ll find the answer quite logically, like swimming with sharks – not a good idea. It may be from childhood: you fell ice skating as a child and hurt yourself and now you’re scared of ice. Or it may be something inexplicable, that inner feeling that something just doesn’t feel right. That’s usually when your intuitive warning system kicks in, when both the logical and emotional mind are quiet and all you really have to go on is your gut.
