Energy Cleansing Tips for Health Care Professionals, Service Workers and Sensitive People

October 17th, 2011

If you’re a sensitive person, health care professional, law enforcement officer, firefighter, healer or use your intuitive ability on a regular basis, you may want to consider creating an energy hygiene practice. As much as we may shield ourselves, an exchange or absorption of negative energy can still remain a work hazard. There is so much that happens on a physics level when energies are co-mingling or connected to each other, especially in a therapeutic way. Though energy hygiene isn’t just for the professional, it’s recommended for any sensitive person who tends to feel drained or notice their mood may be affected by the company that they keep or the environment they’re in.

I put a ton of thoughtful consideration into the kind of intuitive therapist I wanted to be when I first choose to come out of the psychic closet to help people. For years, growing up on Long Island and taking frequent trips to Salem, Massachusetts, I had been exposed to various psychics, mediums, palm readers and intuitive healers. When I worked as a coordinator at a psychic fair in Long Island, I met more negative psychics than positive. I remember feeling grateful when I met an intuitive who was gentle, caring and kind because they didn’t seem to be the norm. Intuitives and health care workers who absorb toxic energy tend to be loaded with judgment and seem to always focus on and deliver negative news. They are energetically heavy, as if carrying around the weight of the world. And in some ways, they are. If you don’t practice energy cleansing and really get in check with yourself, you may find yourself getting lost in negative emotion and exposed to God knows what else is being exchanged when the doors to different dimensions are opened – this includes hospitals, hospices, war zones, on-scene emergencies and other settings where high levels of stress, shock, grief, illness, death and dying occur.

I didn’t want to be the kind of healer that kept recycling toxic vibes from one client to the next, feeling drudge and misery in this work. I wanted to keep it divinely sacred, positive, real and pampered with love, care and comfort as much as possible. This takes self-awareness and a commitment to using this gift responsibly. I’m not just talking about the gift of intuition or whatever service you provide for others, but this also goes for the gift of life that we all have. I’ve found the most effective way to keep yourself positive and energized in your professional practice and in life is to practice energy hygiene awareness on a regular basis.

Enforcing strong physical and emotional boundaries with people, getting enough rest, eating healthily, getting enough exercise and fresh air and making time for your own peace of mind greatly increase your resistance to absorbing toxic energy. However, if you’ve been feeling rundown, experiencing stress, or if your physical immunity is low, you may become more vulnerable to absorbing toxic energy.

If you’ve been exposed to toxicity or have had a negative or stressful experience that has left you drained, the following energy clearing tips may help.

Here are tips to consider whether you can use a clearing

  • You feel unusually tired and unmotivated
  • You feel fear, dread, depression or anxiety for no obvious reason
  • A change in mood for no obvious reason; feeling blah or down “out of the blue”
  • Part or parts of your body feel tense and heavy, especially around the head, heart or stomach
  • You start craving food that isn’t good for you
  • You find yourself thinking the worst or negatively in general
  • You find yourself judging a lot or feeling jealous, envious or insensitive
  • You’re having nightmares or trouble sleeping
  • You’re feeling paranoid or obsessive
  • You feel annoyed or irritated by positivity, affection or love
  • You feel isolated and want to be alone
  • You experience weight gain or bloating
  • You feel angry for no obvious reason, you feel argumentative and impatient
  • You start feeling physically ill

Recommended tips for clearing toxic energy you may have absorbed

Low level of toxicity (mild symptoms)

  • Sea salt bath
  • Take a nature walk
  • Say a cleansing and protection prayer
  • Meditate with a focus on using breath to cleanse the chakras
  • Try yoga, Tai chi or another energy exercise to release stress and tension and circulate healthy energy
  • Try sage, aromatherapy, cleansing herbal teas, flower essences
  • Enforce strong personal, emotional and physical boundaries with people

Medium level of toxicity (moderate symptoms)

  • Read a cleansing script such as in John Livingston’s book, Adversaries Among Us or from another source that you feel comfortable with, believe in and trust
  • Try crystal therapy: place stones on the chakras and meditate while lying down
  • Try a cleansing guided meditation such as Doreen Virtue’s Angel Therapy Meditations and my Chakra Healing with Archangels.
  • Try music therapy: listen to positive, uplifting music such as classical, Protected or Let It Go from the Inspired album, or other music that lifts your spirit and fosters feelings of peace and love
  • Enforce strong personal, emotional and physical boundaries with people

Combine any of the above with a salt bath or sage. I recommend practicing the cleansing first such as with prayer and crystal therapy, then bathing after, if possible before sleep. I’ve also found that regular cleansing of the third eye chakra with Reiki after therapeutic sessions is very effective in keeping psychic sight “clean” and in the light. It’s also a good idea to clear your space after clearing yourself.

High level of toxicity (severe symptoms)

You may want to contact a professional healer who works with energy medicine and has experience clearing toxic energy. This can be an acupuncturist, Reiki therapist, shaman or other kind of energy healer. Do some research and ask questions so you feel confident about who you’re working with. You may want to combine energy healing with another form of self-care such as massage and a detox juice, fast or cleansing foods or teas. This will support the detox process and help relax mind, body and spirit, promoting strength, resilience and healing.

Toxic energy is like spiritual bacteria. It can travel, evading the human eye, and spread negativity like bad germs when your mental, emotional or physical immunity is low. The good news is becoming aware of your mental, emotional and physical feelings encourages self-discovery and reflection. Through this practice, you learn more about yourself and receive an opportunity to love and nurture yourself. With time, energy hygiene will become second nature, as normal and routine as brushing your teeth – and it will give you that same fresh, clean feeling.
