Jamie Oliver Tries To Help U.S.

August 22nd, 2011

I watched the original series on the BBC when British chef Jamie Oliver went on a mission to change the way kids eat at school. He was appalled by the greasy, salty, fatty, starchy, veggie-less plates of reheated mush that kids were getting physically and emotionally addicted to. I was so impressed and incredibly grateful for his work giving school lunches a gourmet overhaul, so obviously fueled by love and passion for children’s health, that I sent him a thank you card. I received an autographed photo in return. I framed it and keep it in my kitchen as a symbol of hope that a nutrition evolution will eventually occur in all of our children’s schools that will change the future wellness of our children.
Jamie fought stubborn lunch ladies who were adamant on maintaining the simple routine of serving previously frozen, absolutely nutritionless food to young, growing children.
After successfully winning over schools in England and becoming BFF with one of his former lunch lady rivals, he’s moved on to America, inventor of Micky D’s – fast foods that make our kids hooked, sick and sluggish. Much to his chagrin, our country isn’t being so welcoming to his cause. In fact, the Los Angeles school district is making it clear his passion to upgrade school lunches to healthy, nutritious meals is simply not on their agenda.
It’s hard to watch Jamie’s sensitive spirit fight through tears to help provide kids with the healthy nutrition and tasty food that they deserve. It was also hard to watch on a recent episode how some kids are so nutritionally unaware of what they’re eating – some thought chocolate came from a lake, others thought butter comes from corn. I learned a lot from an episode about what’s in commercial ice cream – human hair, insects and chemicals – gross. Jamie’s homemade sundae inspired me to make my own. It’s easy and tastes so much better than the processed stuff.
Jamie’s brave battle to feed kids well is such an important one. We will see cases of ADHD, childhood diabetes, obesity, fatigue, depression and other health problems decrease majorly if Jamie has his way. Our eating patterns are created at a very young age, and it sets the precedent for our eating habits in the future (for better or worse). If kids learn how to eat well before they reach adulthood, not only will their health improve, but they will have less chances of battling eating disorders, including yo yo dieting, as they get older.
