Embracing Laziness

August 22nd, 2011

My chihuahua has a pretty balanced life. She’s plenty active but also loves to rest. As a Type A’er, I often find myself harboring guilt on days when I do nothing. Though my body makes it clear that I need rest, and intellectually I know that a day’s rest can provide quality physical, mental and spiritual restoration, my mind can’t help but review the list of things left undone.
I start thinking of what I could have accomplished instead of remembering how much my body has done on this day of rest: hormones and metabolism balance, immunity strengthens, bones and muscles get a break from constant movement and pressure. The entire body becomes refreshed with energy. The mind can think clearer, feel more inspired and positive.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget how hard our body works to keep us well when we rest – and how necessary rest really is.
If you want something done, a Type A is the first person you want to call. But if you want someone to relax with you on a beach and do nothing but sip drinks and smile under the sun, you may find the Type A’ers nervous system twitching from activity withdrawal. Not always the most fun to be around when you’re trying to unwind and be in your happy place.
Some Type A’ers have become so addicted to getting things done that they will find themselves having difficulty relaxing at all unless they physically go to a yoga class or put on a meditation CD.
If you’re a busy body like me, you probably know the importance of rest for your health. Sometimes you need to be assertive and just say no to life’s demands. Pencil in your zen time. You’ll find your whole perspective on things change once you’re more rested. You end up getting more things done on those busy days as a result of giving yourself more rest.
On this lazy summer day, I am reminded by my grateful body how needed a day off has been. No emails, no phone calls, no errands. Just a glorious day in bed watching funny videos on you tube and enjoying the comfort of my cozy log bed. Snuggled up with my dog who is quite content with a day doing absolutely nothing. She doesn’t feel a shred of guilt about it.
And neither do I.
