I Had A Dream
I saw this image of “Coexist” you often see on bumper stickers. Warm, watery and relaxing, I felt peaceful just looking at it. But when I fell asleep that night, I found myself in a nightmare.
My friend, who I’m living with now and who is in the Army and currently on a deployment list in “real life,” got deployed in my dream. Concerned for her well-being, I decided to go with her for support. But we weren’t sent overseas. The terrorists had infilterated America’s workforce and were working in disguise, so you didn’t know if the guy serving you coffee was also about to shoot you with a silencer. We were in a bookstore and I would see flashes of guns as some of the clerks walked by, looks of hate in their eyes as they randomly searched for their next innocent victim.
We couldn’t let the terrorists know we were there or we’d be in grave danger. It was a highly intense atmosphere, thick with anxiety and fear, wondering how we would complete this mission alive and how on earth all of these killers could be stopped when they were hidden everywhere in our society. And they had rights, being here, we couldn’t just assume anything. We needed proof, but by the time we had it, it was too late. Someone else was killed.
I remember thinking in the dream, this war in the Middle East is a young person’s war. I thought about the young soldiers I’ve met here at Fort Bragg who have been deployed, and those that haven’t yet but are eager to for the experience. I thought about the young minds being corrupted by hate disguised as faith in the Middle East, and how insane it all is.
Shortly after having this thought, I found myself in Grand Central Station in New York City. I saw the tall, broad, dark eyed young man who had been a terrorist working at the bookstore. I felt scared, wondering what he was going to do next. There were tons of people around who he could potentially harm. He pulled out a pair of retro ’80’s black sunglasses and slid them on his face. He faced me, smiled, then turned around and met up with a bunch of young men who were hanging out. They started talking, in all different languages. One of them was French, another German, another American and Middle Eastern. They looked like any other young high school grads or college guys, fresh faced with that youthful glow and invincible look in their eye.
I said to the terrorist, “What are you doing?”
He shrugged, “We’re not doing this anymore. We’re not believing it, buying into it. We’re done.”
Then he and the other young men, dressed casually in jeans and looking pretty darn cool, strutted off into the station to find the train that would take them to their new life. A life of freedom. A life of free thought. A life of peace.
I woke up, surprised by my mind’s own optimism and praying that this was more than just a dream. I pray that this is a vision that comes true in my children’s lifetime.
