How To Evolve Your Brain–The Science Of Changing Your Mind

October 18th, 2009

Greetings Lovemaster!

Last night I had the privilege of attending a Triangle Holistic Health Meetup hosted by Sunny Wang and Tim Armantrout.

We were gathered to watch Evolve Your Brain–The Science of Changing Your Mind–a two hour seminar by Dr. Joe Dispenza, author on his book of the same title.  He has spent over 10 years studying how the human mind works, stores information and why it perpetuates the same behavioral patters repeatedly.  Dr. Dispenza was featured in What the Bleep Do we Know?! and What the Bleep–Down the Rabbit Hole.

Would You Like To Learn To Build Your Own Neural Empire?

The lecture was a bit long-winded and could have been a LOT  shorter BUT that did not lessen the literal MIND BUILDING information contained within.  I took extensive notes, had massive insights and am living in neurologically new way today as a result of both.

Here are some major insights from the lecture to consider:

  • We need to learn to think greater than how we feel – Many of us are exposed to reactionary living in our society.  Have you considered how we as a collective react to racism, sexism, corruption, murder, injustice etc? It’s the feeling trap.  Those who understand deeply how our emotions work alter our feelings knowing they can direct our thoughts immediately after.  There is a freedom that comes with embracing this insight.
  • Our greater mind keeps our heart beating – It manages an infinite to-do list.  Dr. Bernie Siegel once told me “Your body loves you.”  Have you ever thought how the biology of our bodies are impeccably, precise, efficient and unconditionally accepting of its duty to keep you running? Even if you’re a murderer, thief or outcast from society your body still heals you as if you were the greatest person alive.  Biology is love.
  • “My  internal thoughts and reactions to life caused my disease”Dr. Dispenza studied cases of spontaneous remission and found that people who miraculously got better ALL accepted this concept and acted to change it.  Have you ever considered how we might be the ones causing our own health ailments? Dr. Dean Shrock wrote a book called Doctors Orders: Go Fishing concluded that people who felt loved, listened to, supported and cared lived longer than expected.  Dr. Dispenza  described how a man who was expected to live 6 months was still going strong 25 years later.
  • Our internal and external environment pushes genetic buttons – Many scientists have been implying that our genes some how just automatically emerge based on our families past history.  (I.e. The idea that “cancer, alcoholism, grundlitis runs in my family so I’m destined to get it”.)  This is untrue.  It’s our internal and external environment which turns on certain genes and others off.  We must recognize, support our biological functions that activate life enhancing aspects of our biology.  What kind of generalities do you make about yourself regarding heredity, race or even gender?
  • Stress is the #1 element that creates illness – 3 types of stress: physical, chemical and emotional.  Scientific research is pretty clear on how the results of stress are inevitably funneled into our biology causing a chemical tussle.  We can create the reciprocal of stress chemicals which are blissful, positive happy chemicals.  How are you managing stress?
  • Personality traits are created from our emotional reaction – This point in particular gave me pause.  It’s so true.  Have you considered how others define us based on our reactions to things? For example: Let’s say you’re scared of spiders, insects, bees or something else that we encounter regularly.  People who know you’re terrified of these things could easily call you “Scaredy”.  If we choose to wear this as our identity then this truth will proliferate massively in our lives.  If we found a way to relax and “get over” our fears or at least react more calmly, then that identity goes away because we understand that it’s not necessarily a personality trait, perhaps just a reaction.
  • Meta cognition is looking at a thought without being immersed in itDavid Hawkins talks about the concept of non-positionality–meaning living life as an objective observer.  Dr. Dispenza describes this term in a scientific way which implied to me that looking at the world scientifically is looking at the world spiritually.  Are there times where you have objectively been able to watch people, places, things, events and beyond without taking a position or judging?

Here was my BIG takeaway from the film: The Mind is the Brain in action–in other words thinking in new ways is creating a new mind. It is our job to learn new information and apply what we learn and use it to make new experience.

It Can’t Be That Easy, What’s The Catch?

Well, the catch is that we stress ourselves out.  Stress forces our body to focus on repairing and healing rather than growing and building.  Stress is the precursor for all illnesses.  So, as long as we understand that we must redirect our mind and bodies energy toward creating a new mind by accurately applying focused action.

Eliminate Neural Rigidity By Building Your Neural Architecture

One way to literally pave new neural road in the highway of your mind is to make new connections and maintain those connections in our brain.  This means relating old and new information and continuously finding ways to integrate ideas.  One way I  do this is by examining the subject at its essence.

For example: I have a friend who was a diligent student, technician and investor in stock, money and other financial markets.  My thoughts began with what the stock market is composed of–millions and millions of intangible energetic data pouches of perceived value (backed by a dollar amount) held by people in the form of stocks, bonds, securities and more.

The keyword rang out in my head: people.  So, I realized the stock market is nothing more than people buying, selling or otherwise exchanging intangible energetic data pouches of perceived value.  I realized how those who have data on how people work could determine behavioral patterns, probabilities and other statistics on how people react to different variables (like weather, catastophies, economic up and downturns, holiday etc).  All this just from seeing the stock market as what it is not just numbers, money, and stocks–its people who make the markets what they are.

Metaphorically it also occurred to me how making and maintaining new connections in your brain applies to people as well.  It’s great to make connections but doesn’t the most fun and enjoyment come from maintaining your longer term friendship over time?  You might hit it off with someone who you first meet but its only when you continuously hang out interact and experience together that you get the true enjoyment of the connection.  Consider how this could relate to our knowledge, intellect and mind.

In addition, people can function as extensions of your mind helping you to sort out information, identify information gaps and propose new ideas aka new knowledge driven neural pathways.  Me writing this article helps you to recognize your own mind and the possibilities within.  Someone else who reads this and responds might link me to new information I hadn’t heard about that builds on these concepts.  Now our minds are really CONNECTING!

Hope you enjoyed reading!

    Aaron,
Hello! Good to see you again….glad you learned alot from the lecture and the seminar you watched. The mind is the builder, what we think is what we are. Isn’t it great when we have those Ah, Ha moments? Changing the way we view things, changes our neural pathways. There are many layers and levels to our system and we are just beginning to merge science with spirituality so that there is no separation rather there is an understanding of the inclusion. The key to everything is alignment both within and with that which is outside of us. The more we can understand where are own thoughts come from and why, especially those not of good feeling; the better we can heal and rise above all the chaos in our lives. I like to say, all there is is love. Get out of the head and into your heart….do things based on your feelings not your thoughts.

Glad to see you are doing well. Send me a note, would love to catch up.

    Blessings,
    Eileen

Hey Aaron, great article…I’ve been really interested lately in finding herbs and other foods that improve brain function…ginseng/gotu kola is a great combo in the herb department…and coconut oil and fish oil are great in the food department.
